About Anup Joshi
Dr. Anup Joshi recently developed a Reference Emission Level (RL) for Terai Arc Landscape, Nepal, a sub-national REDD+ project. Anup used LANDSAT satellite data, high-resolution Rapid Eye imagery, aerial photos and topographic maps, to analyze deforestation and forest degradation in TAL between 1999 and 2011. Anup is currently working with the government and non-government agencies in Nepal and Thailand, to develop MRV protocols and activities to accurately measure, monitor, report and verify forest carbon stocks for successful implementation of performance based REDD+ programs at sub-national and national levels. Anup was also a course instructor for the advanced Terrestrial Carbon Accounting Certificate held at the University of California, San Diego in 2013.
Since 1984 Anup has been involved in wildlife conservation and management in lowlands of Nepal. He studied spacing behavior of the common palm civet and natural history and movement patterns of the sloth bear in the Chitwan National Park, Nepal. During these studies it became clear that the protected areas alone are not sufficient to for long term conservation of large mammals. Therefore, he extended his studies to include habitat extension and restoration and motivating local communities to create a community forest. He initiated the Baghmara Community Forest in the buffer zone of the Chitwan National Park . This became the model for the Buffer Zone Act of 1993. Following this model, local communities with help from national and international agencies have extended community forests to cover more than 5,000 ha of degraded and overgrazed lands adjacent to the park. The Baghmara Community Forest also help to extend the community forestry user group movement from the middle hills to the Nepalese lowlands.
He used a GIS model to show the possibility of linking 11 protected areas in the Terai or lowlands of Nepal and India to maintain dispersal and gene flow for tigers and other large mammals. This model developed into the Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) Project by World Wildlife Fund (WWF). As a Project Scientist for WWF he developed a 10-year strategic plan for TAL; analyzed forest conditions of TAL based on satellite data using Remote Sensing.
His goal is to use latest available scientific tools to design, develop, coordinate, implement, monitor and evaluate natural resource management strategies to maximize wildlife conservation and ecosystems services. He brings to this effort a strong belief in a multi-stakeholder and interdisciplinary approach that encompasses collaboration of ecologists, sociologists and economists working with local communities, government agencies.
